MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Daniel Townsend Pope, Ph.D, of Mount Pleasant, died Monday, Dec. 4, 2006, in a local hospital. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt;Dr. Pope was born Dec. 24, 1913, at Edisto Island, a son of the late Daniel Townsend Pope II and Sarah Murray Pope. He graduated from Edisto Island High School in 1931; received his B.S. degree from Clemson University in 1935; and his M.S. degree from Louisiana State University in 1937. In 1950, he returned to Cornell University and completed his Doctorate degree and graduated in 1952 with his Ph.D. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt;Dr. Pope was Assistant Professor at Berry College, Rome, Ga. from 1937 to 1940; Graduate Assistant Professor at Cornell University from 1940 to 1941; Associate Professor and Professor at North Carolina State University from 1947 to 1976. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt;He was also a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and his military duty extended from 1941 until 1946 at Little Rock, Ark., Fort Benning, Ga., Tyler, Tex., and Fort Meade, Md. In 1944, he was assigned to the 28th Infantry Division at the Battle of the Bulge and served in the European Theatre until V-E Day. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt;In 1945, he was assigned to Military Government and served in Civil Administration returning to the United States in 1946. He was a member and elder at Western Boulevard Presbyterian Church from 1948 until 1976; and in 1976 until present, he was a member and elder of The Presbyterian Church on Edisto Island. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt;He was also a member of Alpha Zeta Honorary Society and the American Society for Horticulture Society, where he was elected a Fellow in American Society Horticulture Science in 1974. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt;Surviving are daughter Patricia Hastings and husband Jimmy of Salisbury, N.C.; granddaughter Melissa A.H. Cox and husband Jason of Raleigh, N.C.; grandson Daniel O. Hastings of Asheville, N.C.; and niece Caroline H. Sams of Edisto Island, S.C. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt;He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and his wife of 49 years, Adelaide Seabrook Pope, who he married Aug. 30, 1939. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Service: The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in The Presbyterian Church on Edisto Island. Burial will follow in the churchyard. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Visitation: Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the service. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt;Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, 5900 Core Road, Suite 504, North Charleston, SC 29406; or The Presbyterian Church on Edisto Island , 2164 Hwy. 174, North Charleston, SC 29438; or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude’s Place, P.O.
