Bob Craig receives MDA award

,left,;Bob Craig, general manager of Derrick’s Travel Plaza on Peeler Road, was honored Jan. 25 for his work with the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Ruthie Mihal, district director of MDA, presented Craig with a letter from Jerry Lewis, thanking him for his tireless and determined efforts over the past twenty-five years to raise funds for children and adults affected by neuromuscular disease and his participation in the “Shamrocks Against Dystrophy” program. This is the mobile program where customers are asked to purchase a paper shamrock for $1. They write their name on the shamrock and the store displays them.
The Derrick Travel Plaza is the highest selling single location in the Charlotte area. Last year they raised $4,000.
Jaycees officers
The Spencer Jaycees inducted new officers at Pinnochio’s Restaurant in Spencer on Jan. 24. Incoming officers were inducted by N.C. state vice president, Scott Alexander.
New officers include: Melissa Johnston, president, who is a third generation president (grandfather, Julian Johnston 1965-1966 and father, Todd Johnston 1991-1992);
Melissa Hurley, community vice president; Melissa Motley membership vice president; Kevin Hurley, individual vice president; Dana Dimarzo, management vice president; Stephanie Leichman, secretary; Tony Bean, treasurer and dues secretary; Brian Carpenter, chairman of the board; and Kevin Hall, state director.
Alpha Kappa Alpha
Salisbury’s Delta Xi Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority recently elected new officers They are: Lovetta Moore, president ; Cecelia McCorkle, vice president; Joy Kennedy, recording secretary; Renese Bates assistant recording secretary; Stephanie McNeil, corresponding secretary; Cassondra Heilig, financial secretary; Sarah Lightner, treasurer; Jean Kennedy parliamentarian; Fonda Kirk, Ivy Leaf reporter; Lori Henderson, chaplain; Earnestine Krider, courtesies; LaWanda Washington, doorkeeper; and Amelia Godfrey and Tina Wallace, graduate advisors.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. is the oldest Greek-letter organization established by and for African American college-trained women. This sisterhood is composed of women who have consciously chosen this affiliation as a means of self-fulfillment through volunteer service.
