Area briefs: Stanly rallies; South romps

Stanly County rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning and beat Kannapolis 8-7 in American Legion baseball on Wednesday.
It was the first division game for both teams.
Wesley Honeycutt, Michael Boger, Hunter Pate and Andrew Lawing had two hits each for Kannapolis (1-1).
Nathan Furr (Catawba) took the mound in relief for Stanly and shut down Kannapolis in the late innings.
Kannapolis plays at home against South Rowan on Saturday.
n South Rowan (2-2) shelled Proehlific Power, a 19-under Palomino team, 12-5 on Wednesday.
Maverick Miles homered and had three hits and three RBIs. Ryan Bostian stole three bases. Caleb Shore had a bases-clearing triple.
Matt Ingold had two hits.
South turned three double plays to help pitcher C.J. Neal notch a victory.
– Intimidators split
The Kannapolis Intimidators split Wednesday’s twin bill at Delmarva. losing 3-1 and winning 3-2. Joe Persichina drove in the only Kannapolis run in the opener. In the nightcap, the Intimidators plated the go-ahead run in the eighth on a throwing error. Dale Mollenhauer homered. Kannapolis returns home on Saturday.
– Indians honored
Catawba outfielders David Thomas and Jerry Sands and pitcher Blake Ketner were named to the American Baseball Coaches Association All-South Region first team.
n College baseball
Charlotte designated hitter Rob Lyerly was named to the All-Atlantic 10 first team.
Both of Lyerly’s parents are Rowan natives. His father, Robert, played at East Rowan.
Charlotte catcher Chris Taylor, who played for Concord’s American Legion squad, also made the Atlantic-10 first team.
– Open gym at SHS
New Salisbury girls basketball coach Andrew Mitchell will have open gym today at 3 p.m.
Anyone interested in playing for the Hornets should attend.
– Bulldogs get victory
West Rowan defeated Southeast 4-3 on Wednesday in Southeast’s final regular-season game.
Conner Edwards had three hits and two RBIs for West (7-4). Corbett Foster had two hits, including a double that drove in the winning runs. Matt Miller, went the distance on the mound for the Bulldogs, scattering five hits and fanning seven.
Louis Kraft had two hits and two RBIs for Southeast (7-7, 5-7). K.J. Pressley, pitcher Andy Austin, Kaison Denton and Jacob Fink had one hit apiece.
West plays at North Rowan on Thursday. The tournament begins Tuesday at China Grove.
– Corbin Hills golf
The Corbin Hill Ladies Golf Association played in a crossover event on May 20.
Toni Iossi won low gross.
Cindy Carmazzi, Miriam Gruber and Carolyn Ries tied for first low met. Tying for second low net were Shirley Baucom and Karla Swanson.
