GREENSBORO ó Clemson quarterback Cullen Harper is the ACC’s preseason player of the year.
Harper set 21 school records in earning second-team all-ACC honors last season. He received 34 of 64 votes in a poll of media members on the league’s top player, according to voting results released Wednesday.
He finished ahead of two teammates ó James Davis received 16 votes and fellow running back C.J. Spiller had four. No other player in the league had more than two votes in balloting conducted earlier this week at the league’s media days in Greensboro, Ga.
Clemson was the media’s pick to win the league championship.
The Tigers were joined by Atlantic Division rivals Florida State and Wake Forest with four players on the all-ACC team. Harper and Davis were joined by receiver Aaron Kelly and safety Michael Hamlin.
Kelly and Davis were two of seven players to make the preseason team after claiming spots on the all-league team following last season, joining Boston College’s Ryan Purvis, Georgia Tech’s Andrew Gardner and Vance Walker, Virginia Tech’s Victor Harris and Wake Forest’s Alphonso Smith.
Every school was represented on the all-league team except Duke, Miami and North Carolina State.
