Dewey R. Preslar Jr. has been elected chairman of the North Carolina Self-Insurance Security Association.
Preslar is vice president for risk management and loss prevention at Food Lion.
Adopted by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1986, the association is a tax-exempt business organization that serves as the statutory successor for the payment of covered workers compensation claims against member self-insurers in the event of insolvency.
It is a membership organization comprised of 134-licensed self-insurers in North Carolina. It was created to avoid excessive delay in the payment of covered claims, to avoid financial loss to claimants because of the insolvency of a self-insurer.
In 2007, the association paid in excess of $5.2 million in claims and related expenses for employees of insolvent member self-insurers.
Members include both self-insured companies and group self-insurance funds.
Preslar is president of Risk Management Services Inc. and vice president of Delhaize Insurance Co., which are wholly owned subsidiaries of Delhaize Group. He also serves on the board of directors of Food Lion Charitable Foundation.
He is also a Grand Line Officer of the Grand Lodge of North Carolina. For a number of years, he has been chairman of the board for the Rowan County Masonic Scholarship Fund.
New pediatrician
ALBEMARLE ó Dr. David F. Pruette, a pediatrician, has joined the staffs of Albemarle Pediatrics and Stanly Regional Medical Center.
Pruette recently completed a pediatrics residency at Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children in Falls Church, Va. He earned his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and his undergraduate degree in biology from Erskine College in Due West, S.C., where he was valedictorian of his class.
At Albemarle Pediatrics, he joins the team of Dr. Linda Lawrence, Dr. Tricia Schmit, Dr. Susan Watson and Edie Johnson, PA-C. The practice is in Suite 203 of the Yadkin Medical Office Building, 105 Yadkin St.
Bank promotes Barrier
WINSTON-SALEM n Salisbury native Carmen Kluttz Barrier has been promoted to vice president at BB&T.
Barrier, who joined the bank in 2003, is an executive programs special projects manager in BB&T’s Human Systems division. She is based at 200 W. Second St.
She earned her bachelor’s degree in computer information systems from Appalachian State University. She and her husband, Andrew, live in Rockwell.
Shell joins firm
Jason M. Shell, a certified financial planner, has joined Raymond James Financial Services Inc.
He has has offices on Jake Alexander Boulevard in Salisbury and on Northcross Drive in Huntersville and can be reached at 704-892-1012.
He has worked in financial planning for 10 years. He is a graduate of Queens University of Charlotte and has a bachelor of science degree in business administration from East Carolina University in Greenville.
He holds Series 7, 63 and 65 Securities and North Carolina Life and Health Insurance licenses and is also certified in Long Term Care Insurance. He began his career with Raymond James in 1998 and recently rejoined the firm.
He and wife Heidi have a daughter, Raegan Page, live in China Grove and attend First Evangelical Methodist Church in Kannapolis. He is a member of Eureka Masonic Lodge 283 and Rowan County Shrine Club.
RCCC evening course
Starting Aug. 18, Rowan-Cabarrus Community College will offer a new evening certificate program in computer numeric controlled machining.
It will meet four nights a week for two, 16-week semesters at RCCC’s North Campus. CNC machining, manual machining, blueprint reading and advanced measuring skills will be offered.
Students completing the certificate program will be prepared for entry level positions as machinists and programmers in a variety of industries, including engine building and motorsports.

Bank of Carolinas loss
MOCKSVILLE ó Bank of the Carolinas Corp. had a net loss of $259,000 for the second quarter compared to net income of $592,000 in the second quarter of 2007.
Diluted income or loss per share was 7 cents compared to income of 15 cents for the comparable quarter of 2007.
For the six-month period, the bank reported a net loss of $264,000 compared to net income of $1.37 million for the same six-month period of 2007. Diluted income per share was 7 cents compared to income of 35 cents per diluted share for the same period of 2007.
Financial study
KANNAPOLIS ó A 13-week study for anyone interested in learning and applying solid financial principles of common-sense money management will be offered at Blackwelder Park Baptist Church beginning Aug. 27.
Dave Ramsey, a personal money management expert, is a national personality, author of three New York Times best-sellers and founder of Financial Peace University. He teaches the class via 13 entertaining video lessons, followed by a small group discussion.
The Financial Peace University sessions are scheduled 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesdays Aug. 27-Nov. 19.
Class materials will be available for purchase and scholarships will be offered upon request. Class previews will be held in the church’s Family Life Center 5-6 p.m. Aug. 10 and 17.

Food Lion senior VP
Food Lion has named Robert Canipe senior vice president of corporate development.
He will be responsible for real estate, construction, maintenance, store equipment procurement and energy management and will be on Food Lion’s executive committee.
Canipe joined Food Lion in 2001 as director of strategic and business analysis. He has also been vice president of business strategy and vice president of dry category management.
He worked for Proctor & Gamble Co. from 1990-2001. He has a master’s degree in finance and marketing from Indiana University and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He, his wife and their three children live in Salisbury.
Rite Aid RX card
North Carolina residents can now realize savings on more than 10,000 prescription drugs with the free Rite Aid RX Savings Card launched Aug. 1 at Rite Aid drug stores across the state.
The card, which requires no membership fee and is free to anyone who enrolls, also provides discounts on Rite Aid brand products, including 1,500 over-the-counter medications.
Applications for enrollment can be obtained at any Rite Aid pharmacy in North Carolina. The card was first introduced in Michigan two months ago and also is available in South Carolina and Georgia.
Card benefits are effective as soon as the application is completed and turned into the Rite Aid pharmacy.
Customers can get a list of the medications covered by the Rite Aid RX Savings Card at any Rite Aid pharmacy in North Carolina. The card can be used for prescriptions for any family member in a family, including pets, but cannot be used in conjunction with prescription insurance.
There are 256 Rite Aid stores in North Carolina, the result of Rite Aid’s purchase of the Brooks and Eckerd drugstore chains in June 2007.
AADH inducts Krueger
Debbye Krueger is one of six new members inducted into the American Academy of Dental Hygiene (AADH) at its annual meeting July 31 in Chicago.
Krueger, a public health dental hygienist and educational consultant, works in the Rowan-Salisbury Schools educating children on the benefits of good oral health and conducts a preventive oral health program under the direction of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, Oral Health Section.
She also presents continuing education courses to dental professional groups and dental schools on a national level.
She is a graduate of East Tennessee State University and a native of Johnson City, Tenn., now living in Salisbury.
The AADH stresses professional growth through leadership, mentorship and fellowship. Its goals are to foster continuing education, provide formal recognition of excellence in the practice of dental hygiene and recognize distinguished community service. It also is the only organization that approves continuing education courses for dental hygiene nationwide.
New Uwharrie officers
ALBEMARLE ó Misty Thornburg and Lindsey Capell were recently named assistant vice presidents by the Uwharrie Capital Corp. Board of Directors.
Thornburg joined the investment and insurance subsidiaries in 1999 and then moved into her current role as database manager, holding responsibility for the overall management and maintenance of the investment advisory company database and reporting of the company’s portfolio returns and holdings.
She is also an investment advisor representative, holding her Series 7, 66 and 53 securities registrations with the National Association of Securities Dealers.
A 1999 cum laude graduate of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, she has a bachelor of science degree in business administration with a finance major. She is a member of the Strategic Investment Advisors Investment Committee and lives in the Albemarle area with her husband, Scott, and their children, Rachel and Catherine.
Capell joined the Uwharrie Capital in February 2006, assisting with the development, implementation and ongoing management of the remote deposit capture product and other online banking services. A 2005 cum laude graduate of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, she has a bachelor of arts degree in Spanish. She is a also a graduate of the Mingle School of Real Estate with further training through The Payments Institute in 2007.
A Charlotte resident, she is a member of the company’s Young Adult Leaders Committee.
IKEA store shaping up
CHARLOTTE ó IKEA, the world’s leading home furnishings retailer, has reported that steel framing is complete and installation of blue composite panels has begun on its future Charlotte store opening next spring in the University City area.
Installation of the blue panels is a construction milestone that ensures the store will open Spring 2009, and reflects the unique architectural design for which IKEA stores are known worldwide.
When the 356,000 square-foot IKEA Charlotte opens, it will be the Swedish company’s first store and restaurant destination in the Carolinas, the fifth in the Southeast, and 36th in the United States.
Michael Maier, IKEA real estate manager, said, “We hope to be enclosed fully before winter, and cannot wait to open IKEA Charlotte in Spring 2009.”
In addition to 10,000 exclusively-designed items, IKEA Charlotte will present 50 different room settings, three complete model home interiors, a supervised children’s play area and a 350-seat restaurant serving Swedish specialties such as meatballs with lingonberries or salmon plates, as well as American dishes.

There currently are more than 280 IKEA stores in 36 countries, including 35 in the United States.
Physicians join group
Nine former Health Management Associates Inc. physicians from medical practices based in Mooresville joined Novant Medical Group, part of Novant Health, Aug. 1.
They were part of 45 making the move. On Sept. 1, another 41 physicians from other HMA practices in North and South Carolina are expected to join Novant Medical Group. A total of 86 HMA physicians will become a part of the Novant Medical Group network.
Additionally, more than a dozen specialists from each practice ó including physician assistants, nurse practitioners and other clinicians ó will be a part of the transition. Several hundred supporting office medical staff will join as well.
They all joined the organization after Novant Health formed a joint venture with HMA in March. Novant Health purchased a minority share of ownership of all seven HMA hospitals in the Carolinas for $300 million.
As part of the agreement, HMA physicians could choose to become an independent medical practice, join Novant Medical Group or choose other options. The nine based in Mooresville who chose to join Novant Medical Group, all formerly a part of HMA’s network, include Carolina Urology Care, Hospitalists of Lake Norman, Lake Norman Neonatology Associates, Mooresville Surgical Associates, Primary Care Associates ó Williamson Road, Primary Care Associates ó Statesville Avenue, Primary Care Associates ó Denver, Primary Care Associates Internal Medicine and Sherrill Orthopedic Center. Lake Norman Regional Medical Center in Mooresville is one of the seven HMA hospitals included in the agreement.
