SAN DIEGO ó Mark Reynolds hit a three-run homer off infielder Josh Wilson with two outs in the 18th inning, sending the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 9-6 win over the San Diego Padres on Sunday in the longest major league game this season.
The Padres were held hitless through nine extra innings by four relievers. Their only baserunners in extras came on three walks. The game took 5 hours, 45 minutes.
San Diego scored five in the ninth and tied it at 6 on David Eckstein’s first career pinch-hit homer, a three-run shot, with two outs off Chad Qualls.
The Padres used all their relievers and had starter Chad Gaudin ó the loser in Friday night’s series opener ó pitch the 16th and 17th innings before turning to Wilson in the 18th for his third career relief appearance.
Cubs 6, Reds 3, 14 innings
CINCINNAT ó Alfonso Soriano led off the 14th inning with a home run to lead Chicago to the victory.
Soriano hit Mike Lincoln’s first pitch into the seats in right-center for his 14th homer of the season. He was 0 for 5 before the clutch drive.
Mike Fontenot added an RBI single off Lincoln (1-1) and Reed Johnson doubled in a run for the Cubs, who led 3-1 after six innings.
Rookie David Patton (2-1) pitched the 13th to get the win and Angel Guzman finished for his first career save. Patton got Brandon Phillips to line out to right with runners on first and second to end a Cincinnati threat.
Ryan Hanigan, Jerry Hairston Jr. and Jonny Gomes each drove in a run for the Reds. Gomes’ sacrifice fly in the eighth tied it at 3.
Rockies 7, Cardinals 2
ST. LOUIS ó Ubaldo Jimenez threw eight innings of four-hit ball and Paul Phillips drove in three runs for streaking Colorado.
Jimenez (4-6) allowed two runs, struck out nine and walked one. Phillips had a career-best four hits, including his first homer since 2006.
The Rockies have scored 38 runs in their first four-game winning streak of the year and are 6-4 under manager Jim Tracy after going 18-28 under Clint Hurdle.
Albert Pujols had a rare two-run sacrifice fly in the first inning for the Cardinals, who have totaled three runs and nine hits in the last two games.
Mets 7, Nationals 0
WASHINGTON ó Livan Hernandez allowed four singles in seven innings and New York scored five runs in the first.
Hernandez (5-1) walked four and struck out four to win for the fifth time in seven starts.
Bobby Parnell (East Rowan) pitched one-third of an inning in the eighth.
Braves 8, Brewers 7
ATLANTA ó Tommy Hanson faded after a strong start to his major league debut, but Chipper Jones and the Braves rallied to beat Milwaukee.
Jones had four hits, including two homers, and matched his career high with five RBIs to help the Braves prevent the Brewers’ first series sweep in Atlanta.
Ryan Braun hit a pair of two-run homers and Mike Cameron also had a two-run shot for the NL Central-leading Brewers.
Hanson retired the first 10 Milwaukee batters before giving up seven runs, six earned, in six innings.
The Braves trailed 7-5 before scoring three runs in the eighth off Carlos Villanueva (2-4).
Brian McCann’s pinch-hit double drove in Martin Prado. Nate McLouth added a tying double and scored the go-ahead run on Yunel Escobar’s single.
Astros 6, Pirates 4
HOUSTON ó Matt Kata scored from second base on Miguel Tejada’s infield single, snapping a seventh-inning tie in the Astros’ victory.
Giants 3, Marlins 2
MIAMI ó Tim Lincecum pitched three-hit ball into the eighth to win his fifth consecutive decision, and San Francisco beat Florida.
Bengie Molina had two RBIs to back Lincecum (5-1), who went 71/3 innings.
