Two people sustained life threatening injuries when the motorcycle they were on crashed into a car on Shinn Farm Road Friday evening.
The driver and passenger were airlifted by two Carolinas Medical Center medical helicopters around 8 p.m. to the hospital’s trauma center.
The names of the victims weren’t available.
The accident scene is a short distance west of the Mooresville Dragway, near a complex of race shops.
Frank Greene, information officer for the Atwell Volunteer Fire Department, said the bike collided with a small vehicle akin to a station wagon. The bike apparently struck the side of the vehicle.
The accident occurred around 7:20 p.m.
Both bikers, a man and a woman, were thrown off onto a gravel driveway.
Although both were wearing helmets, Greene said both sustained severe head trauma, likely life threatening.
Emergency radio traffic also listed their conditions as critical.
Firefighters from West Rowan set up a landing zone in an open field near race shops.
Rowan EMS and Iredell EMS units responded to the accident.
Efforts to reach the N.C. Highway Patrol were unsuccessful.
