Top Tomato Contest

Rodney Goodman had the goods ó a 2.66-pound tomato ó to win the Salisbury Postís Top Tomato Contest.
As the winner, he gets $100, courtesy of Rowan Countyís Master Gardener volunteers.
Patterson Farm, famous for its strawberries and tomatoes, helped to sponsor the contest.
Official weigh-in stations were at Patterson Farm and at the Farmers Market in downtown Salisbury. Darrell Blackwelder, interim director of the Rowan County Cooperative Extension Service, helped coordinate the submissions.
Goodman also entered a 2.36-pound tomato.
Several entries came in at more than 2 pounds:
Betty Hoffner, 2.53 pounds;
Charles Bostian, 2.50;
Melissa Pethel, 2.49;
Ronnie Hall, 2.47;
David Mitchell, 2.44;
the grandchildren of Rand Yost, 2.43;
Karen Windon, 2.19.
Other entrants were Charlie Brown, Blaine Stewart, Lee Dupree, Sandra Reichart, Bud Rogers, Steve Yost, Kaye Hirst, Don Rink, Carlton Mosher, Randall Morton, Le-Neaís Goble, Kara Drye, Wilroy Cook, Carole Hopkins, Debra Cress, Dallas Case, Megan Powles and Randy Verbridge.
Tomatoes had to be grown in Rowan County. Professional growers and market vendors were not eligible, nor were Salisbury Post or Patterson Farm employees.
