Christmas Happiness: Doing without or with less toughest on the children

Published 12:00 am Wednesday, December 2, 2009

Children don’t understand what it means when a parent gets laid off, and the struggle to make ends meet becomes even more difficult.
They still look forward to presents under the tree. This year’s recession has many parents wondering how they’ll feed their children, much less grant their Christmas wishes.
That’s where the 57th annual Christmas Happiness fund can help. Sponsored by the Salisbury Post and the Rowan County Department of Social Services, the fund provides $40 gift vouchers to Magic Mart or Kmart for each child of qualifying parents, with a maximum of $120 for four or more children.
Those already receiving food assistance, Work First or Family/Children Medicaid need only to contact their caseworker to apply. Others may pick up mail-in applications at the Post, Department of Social Services, Rowan Public Library and the Rowan Health Department or download one from the Social Services Web site.
Applications will be accepted through Monday, Dec. 15.
Please bring Christmas Happiness contributions to the Salisbury Post, 131 W. Innes St., between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays or mail them to the Salisbury Post Christmas Happiness Fund, P.O. Box 4639, Salisbury, N.C. 28145-4639. Make checks payable to the Christmas Happiness Fund and indicate how you wish your donation listed.
