Staff report
Communities In Schools will host volunteer training days in January and February to recruit mentors for Rowan-Salisbury school children.
Communities In Schools is a United Way agency that partners with the Rowan-Salisbury School System to offer various services to children and parents in need.
Sandy Buechler, director of volunteers, said there are about 40 children on the waiting list now who need a mentor.
Anyone in the community can volunteer to mentor a child, but participants must fill out an application and submit to a criminal background check.
During the training sessions, volunteers will learn about general responsibilities, legal concerns and procedures for visiting children at schools.
Most mentors will go to the school during lunch time and visit with their child.
Participants only need to attend one training session.
