Salisbury City Council approved Tuesday some on-street parking requests for two churches.
First Calvary Baptist Church asked for Sunday-only parking in the 400 block of South Long Street.
The city will allow the Sunday parking on the west side of South Long Street between Monroe and Horah streets. On other days, parking will continue to be prohibited.
The city also will allow parking on the south side of Overman Avenue adjacent to John Calvin Presbyterian Church. Previously, parking has been prohibited on Overman between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on both sides.
The church asked that parking be allowed on Overman between Brenner Avenue and Walker Street.
During the week, John Calvin Presbyterian Church is host for a daily meal for seniors, and some of the participants need to park closer to the church for health reasons.
In other city business, council:
– Approved the $143,800 purchase of a CAL-FLO Lime Slurry Feed System for use at the Grants Creek Wastewater Treatment plant. The city awarded the contract to Burnett Lime Co. Inc. The system helps in adjusting pH levels in water.
– Learned from Parks and Recreation Director Gail Elder White that the Salisbury Community Foundation has awarded her department a $3,500 grant toward an outdoor adventure camp next summer at the Salisbury Community Park off Hurley School Road.
Elder White said the department will continue to seek an additional $4,148 to cover the whole program. The Salisbury Community Foundation grant will pay for at least three or four weeks, she said.
– Approved a budget amendment for $11,600 to reflect various donations to the Police Department. Of that money, $2,388.29 will go toward uniforms, $1,600 to the police chaplain’s program, $1,300 toward community services travel, $2,700 to the DARE program and $3,611.71 to a miscellaneous fund.
– Approved a budget amendment reflecting asset forfeitures of $5,584 to the Police Department. The restricted funds will go toward replacing a defective electronic card for the department’s 911 recording system.
