Staff reportThe number of applicants for the Rowan County manager’s job is increasing.
And the quality of the applicants also appears to be improving.”I’m definitely more encouraged,” said Arnold Chamberlain, chairman of the Board of Commissioners. Last month, he said many applicants at that point didn’t have the county government experience needed for the job.
Chamberlain said the county received up to five new applications in the past week or so.
He described candidates as generally between the ages of 42 and 55. About half have experience in North Carolina.
The county has received a total of 27 applications.
Chamberlain said he plans to schedule a closed session of the board at its Jan. 22 meeting to discuss the applications and possibly select candidates who may be interviewed.
Shortly after the resignation of County Manager Bill Cowan, commissioners agreed to handle their own search. Upon receipt, applications are copied and provided to each commissioner. The full board will conduct the interviews.
Cowan left Dec. 31 to head a development project in Pinehurst. Finance Director Leslie Heidrick is interim manager.
