January Helpers
China Grove Elementary School recently recognized students as Mr. Floyd’s Heavenly Helpers for January for exhititing the traits associated with the monthly character word. They are:

Interim administrators
Two academic deans were recently appointed at Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer.
Dr. Robert Spear is interim dean of the School of Business Administration, and Dr. Don Poe is interim dean of the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
“We are very fortunate to be able to internally tap two well-experienced and very capable administrators to maintain and advance the agendas of each of the schools as we launch a national search to permanently occupy both deanships,” said Dr. Philip Ott, acting provost and vice president for academic affairs.
Spear has been director of the university’s Master of Business Administration (MBA) program since July 2002. During his nine-year tenure at Pfeiffer, he has also been dean of the School of Graduate Studies and professor of accounting.
Spear regularly teaches MBA classes at the Swiss Business School in Zurich, Switzerland, and in Riga, Latvia. Prior to coming to Pfeiffer, he had been an associate professor of accounting at both the University of North Carolina at Asheville and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He also taught at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and Virginia Military Institute.
Spear holds a Ph.D. from Virginia Tech, an MBA from the College of William and Mary and a bachelor’s degree from the University of New Hampshire. He has published numerous articles and is the recipient of several honors and awards. Spear and wife Jan live in Mooresville.
Poe was appointed to succeed Dr. Susan Kirkendol, who left Pfeiffer after 14 years join the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.
Poe joined the Pfeiffer staff in 2003 as director of institutional research and planning and associate director of psychology. He previously was vice president of analytical services for Applied Research Analysts in McLean, Va.
Poe also has been a professor in the graduate school at the United States Department of Agriculture, where he taught advanced statistics and data analysis to federal employees across all government agencies. He has held faculty appointments at American University, Mount Holyoke College and Hampshire College.
Poe has published numerous articles and papers and delivered addresses. He earned a Ph.D. from Cornell University, a master’s degree in social psychology from Virginia Tech and a bachelor’s from Duke University. He and wife Susan live in Mint Hill.
Math contest host
For the sixth year in a row, Catawba College will host the N.C. Council of Teachers of Mathematics state contests March 13.
Tests in Algebra I and Geometry will be administered by the Catawba College Mathematics Department. These tests are open to any student who is enrolled in Algebra I or Geometry this current school year.
