Susie Wear advances
Susie Wear, who has been nominated for the Jefferson Scholars Program at the University of Virginia by Salisbury High School, has moved onto the regional level of interviews for the scholarship.
At Salisbury High, Wear is ranked first in her class and was co-chief junior marshal. She is a Junior Rotarian, AP Scholar, Scholar Athlete, PTSA Scholar and vice president of the National Honor Society.
She holds a Perfect Attendance Award and is a state finalist for the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award and a Morehead-Cain nominee. She has been named to Salisbury High’s SAT Hall of Fame and was selected CCC and Rowan County Tennis Player of the Year in 2006.
Co-captain of the varsity tennis team, she won the 2A State Doubles Championship with her partner, Casey Collins. She also played on the team which won the 2A State Title in 2006.
She is All-County and All-Conference in varsity tennis, swimming and soccer and has been named to the 2A All-State tennis team for two consecutive years. A Most Valuable Player for tennis and swimming, she is a four-year state qualifier for N.C. 1A/2A state swim championship.
She has received the Salisbury High School Outstanding Service Award for her community service and is organizing a tennis program, “Swing with Susie,” for at-risk children in the community. She has also been actively involved with Teens with a Mission and Rowan Helping Ministries.
Writing competition
Mimi Wahid of Salisbury, a third-grader at Cannon School in Concord, was a first-place winner in the writing competition sponsored annually by the Greater Cabarrus Reading Association in conjunction with the N.C.
She and five other students at the school received top scores and will move on to competition at the state level.
The “Young Authors Writing Project” is an annual competition that encourages kindergarten-grade 12 students across North Carolina to write creatively about a chosen theme. This year’s theme was “Let’s Read: Where Reading and Writing Come Together.”
Enochville wise owls
Enochville Elementary School recently recognized the following students as December Wise Owls for consistently exhibiting good citizenship, good manners and exceptional behavior:
Kindergarten: Holland Anderson, Thomas Barnes, Samantha Graham, Kennedy Kirkman, Kelly Ross, Todd Smith, Savannah Varner and Auston Wilhelm.
First grade: Morgan Box, Leslie Diaz, Cloe Greene, Ethan Larrimore, Kevin Lazenby and Lee Price.
Second grade: Megan Childers, David Miller, Kaela Plott, T.J. Smith, Jessica Sykes and Kennedy Wright.
Third grade: Jamie Henson, Lydia Isaacs, Tyler McRorie, Artemio Mondragon, Savannah Reynolds and Caylie Tallent.
Fourth grade: Brandon Barbee, Tabatha Donehue, Hunter Ratliff, Jamie Shue and Thomas Starnes.
Fifth grade: Sornram Amphyarat, Alexandria Bare, Elizabeth Bunn, Lauren Hyde, Elizabeth Johnson and Taylor Kluttz.
