Jerry Shelby of Salisbury is the winner of North Carolina’s 2008 Andrus Award for Community Service, AARP’s most prestigious volunteer award.
As an AARP chapter president in Salisbury, Shelby helped increase membership from 18 to 100 persons by convincing people to volunteer for community needs.
His many areas of involvement include serving with the Rowan County Planning Initiative, Rowan LIFE (Life Improvement for Everyone), the Rowan Council on Aging and as the Rowan County delegate to the North Carolina Senior Tar Heel Legislature in Raleigh.
He has been both a Tax-Aide and Driver Safety Program volunteer with AARP and has worked extensively in the area of senior-friendly livable communities and in AARP’s Divided We Fail initiative, seeking reform in health care and financial security.
