Staff report
An 11-year-old Koontz Elementary student tried to assault the school’s principal with a pair of scissors earlier this month, the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office reported.
The boy’s name is not being released because he is a juvenile.
“He was caught stealing two ice cream sandwiches from the lunchroom,” Capt. John Sifford said.
The incident happened Oct. 17. School officials called the Sheriff’s Office when they learned of the theft, principal Rick Dunlap said.
Sifford said the boy became physically aggressive.
“He did pick up a pair of scissors and took a swipe at me,” Dunlap said.
Dunlap said he was able to back away from the boy, and he did not get cut.
The boy was restrained, Sifford said.
The Sheriff’s Office forwarded the case to juvenile services, which will decide if the boy will face charges, Sifford said.
Dunlap said he could not talk about any disciplinary measures the boy could face.
“We’re working to find what’s in that student’s best interest at this time,” Dunlap said.
