Downtown trolley tours will continue this spring thanks to an anonymous donor.
Earlier this month, the Rowan Tourism Development Authority cut the trolley funding as part of an overall budget reduction.
A donor stepped forward to provide the needed $1,700 to keep the trolley tours operating this spring.
The donation was made in honor of Susan Waller, a retired educator, historian and volunteer trolley guide.
Randy Hemann, executive director of Downtown Salisbury Inc., which previously operated the trolley tours, accepted the check.
Hemann said the donor praised Waller for her efforts as a tour guide on the narrated trolley tours and mentioned her countless hours at Rowan Museum, Friends of Rowan Public Library and other local organizations.
Kaye Hirst, executive director of Rowan Museum, also praised Waller for her volunteer work and the key role she plays in the community.
“Susan is an inspiration to history lovers,” Hirst said. “She is able to share not just the history of our community, but the spirit of our community and she does it in a way that brings it to life.”
James Meacham, executive director of the Tourism Development Authority, added his organization’s appreciation. “The TDA appreciates this person stepping up to do this for the community and it means even more having it in the honor of one of our trolley guides.”
Hemann also expressed Downtown Salisbury’s appreciation. “It helps us confirm the value of this service to local folks as well as visitors. The trolleys are a symbol of Salisbury and Rowan County and our strength as an authentic historic destination.”
While the donation will ensure the trolley tours continue through June 30, the Tourism Development Authority will discuss the long-term prospects for operating the trolley at a Jan. 14 planning session.
Guided trolley tours operate every Saturday from April through October from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tours depart from the Visitor Information Center on East Innes Street. The Tourism Authority also provides trolley service for groups by reservation.
