The second annual Autumn Soiree sponsored by the Salisbury/Rowan Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) and Food Lion will be held Nov. 8.
The fundraiser to benefit the chapter’s scholarship foundation is scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Looking Glass Artist Collective on Lee Street in downtown Salisbury.
“Last year’s inaugural event hosted 180 guests and raised $10,000, which allowed the chapter to award two $1,000 scholarhsips for academic year 2008-2009,” said Todd Adrian, chapter president. “We are very proud that this PFLAG chapter is the first organization in North Carolina to award scholarships specifically to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender students and/or their straight allies.”
This year’s event will again include a silent auction, with catering by Chef Tyler Williams and his staff at “Fude for Thot,” comedy with Little Tuna and music by the Craven Moorehead Band.
The addition of new scholarships depends on the soiree’s success, according to Margaret Basinger, Scholarship Advisory Committee chair. A new scholarship will be named the Linda Ketner Community Service Scholarship in honor of Rowan County native Linda Ketner.
“Linda is such a champion of diversity, not just for the GLBT community, but for all who are impoverished and oppressed. We are grateful she allowed us to honor her in this way,” added Basinger.
Dress for the soiree is casual. Cover charge is $20 with advance ticket or $25 at the door. Tickets may be purchased at The Shop at Looking Glass Artist Collective, Critters or Wooden Stone in downtown Salisbury or by calling 704-699-7893.
