Rowan seniors qualify for Senior Olympics

Twelve Rowan County seniors competing in the 24th annual N.C. Senior Games state finals qualified for the 2009 National Senior Games ó the Senior Olympics óto be held in Palo Alto, Calif., next August.
They are: Don Anderson, Gus Andrews, Mikal Barnes, Ruth Bowles, Jay Boyce, Beth Calhoun, Boyce Caudle, Raymond Filz, Joanne French, Ron Gibbs, Bob Goodwin and Hazel Trexler-Campbell. These athletes qualified in sporting events such as golf, basketball, swimming and track and field.
The delegation of Salisbury/Rowan Senior Games participants will be competing against qualifiers from 49 other states and Canada. The National Games competition is a biennial event and is held in different sites across the United States.
Salisbury/Rowan Senior Games is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing year-round health promotion and education for adults 55 years of age and older and is sponsored statewide by the North Carolina Division of Aging and Adults Services.
Local sponsors for the 2008 games include Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina, Cheerwine, Comfort Keepers, Genesis HealthCare, Humana Market Point, the Rowan County Arts Council and Rowan Regional Medical Center.
