Tour Overton and A.L. Brown on Innovation Day

The public is invited to stop by two local schools Tuesday as part of the N.C. School Innovation Tour Day.
Overton Elementary in Salisbury, which is part of the Rowan-Salisbury School System, and Kannapolis City Schools’ A.L. Brown High School will be featured.
Statewide, more than 100 schools are opening their doors to the public on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
The schools will showcase innovative ways students are learning.
At Overton, community members can learn about a fifth-grade project that involves a miniature city called Overtonville.
Students run businesses in which they buy supplies and try to sell products to make a profit.
The city is made up of streets, apartments, rivers, lakes, mountains, schools and skyscrapers.
Lessons in several subjects ó math, language arts, social studies and science ó are tied in with the miniature city.
In social studies, students serve as local officials in the city and created a Constitution and amendments.
The public will also get a chance to learn how Overton is using the IMPACT model, in which students create a documentary and a book.
This year’s IMPACT theme at Overton as “Forces and Motion.”
At A.L. Brown, the community will get a chance to learn more about the school’s freshman academy.
Observers can also attend the school’s Mandarin Chinese class.
The school’s cyber campus will also be on display, as well as the international studies and culinary arts programs.
