Sacred Heart picks Geography Beewinner
About half the people in South America live in which country? Brazil.
The North Atlantic current brings warm waters from the tropics to the west coast of which continent? Europe.
What is the term for a part of an ocean or sea that cuts far into the bordering landmass and may contain one or more bays? Gulf.
These are some examples of the questions that Sacred Heart School students were asked as part of the Geography Bee on Jan. 7.
All students from grades four through eight participated with two finalists from each class.
Then, class winners met for the final round.
Eighth-grader Arnold Yu won first place and will represent Sacred Heart School in the regional competition.

Sixth grade: Will Casmus and Joseph Harrison;

National Geographic Society sponsors the National Geography Bee. Each year, thousands of schools in the U.S. participate in the National Geographic Bee.
The contest is designed to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in the subject and increase public awareness about geography. Schools with students in grades four through eight are eligible for this test of geographic knowledge.

Kane Carter Sherrill of Mooresville has been named to the deanís list at Wofford College for the fall 2010 semester.
To be named to the deanís list, a student must be enrolled for at least 12 semester hours of graded courses and attain a semester grade point average of 3.6 or higher.
West VirginiaUniversity deanís list
More than 5,200 undergraduate students made the deanís list at West Virginia University.
Students must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher in 12 credit hours of graded courses with no incompletes or withdrawals to be named to the deanís list.

Granite Quarryannounces science fair winners
Granite Quarry Elementary School held its Science Fair on Tuesday.
The first place winner was fifth grader, Noah Powell, whose project was titled ě2011 Smell Challenge, Men vs. Women.î
The second place winner was a team of fourth graders, Katelyn Byrd, Grace Faller, and Sarah Roane, whose project was titled ěStrawberries, Good or Bad?î
The third place winner was third grader, Mason Tart, whose project was titled ěBurning Scienceî.
Judges for the fair were Mrs. Carie Fugle and Mr. Mark Childers, science teachers from Salisbury High School.
All of the winners will move on to the Rowan-Salisbury District Science Fair.
