CHAPEL HILL ó North Carolina pitcher Patrick Johnson isn’t giving up many hits. The Tar Heels aren’t allowing any runs.
Johnson scattered three hits over eight innings to lead the Tar Heels to their second straight shutout, a 14-0 rout of James Madison on Saturday night at the Chapel Hill Regional.
Johnson (12-1) struck out 11 ó one shy of a career high ó and shut down the highest-scoring offense in Division I to win his sixth straight decision. Greg Holt homered and drove in four runs, and Ben Bunting finished with three RBIs for the Tar Heels (47-14).
Virginia 10, St. John’s 2
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. ó Virginia left-hander Danny Hultzen used his last start as a pitcher before Monday’s baseball draft to showcase all he will bring to the next level.
Hultzen (11-3) allowed three hits and one run in seven innings and struck out 12 as Virginia, the top national seed, routed St. John’s 10-2 in a winner’s bracket game in the Charlottesville Regional.
Clemson 12, Coastal 7
CLEMSON, S.C. ó Richie Shaffer, Will Lamb and John Hinson homered as Clemson beat Coastal Carolina 12-7 to advance to the championship game of the Clemson Regional.
Shaffer said the Tigers’ power surge ó they hit only 44 homers in their previous 60 games ó was just a matter of time.
South Carolina 11, Stetson 5
COLUMBIA, S.C. ó South Carolinaís Robert
Beary’s grand slam lifted defending national champion South Carolina to an 11-5 victory over the Hatters in the Columbia Regional. Beary’s blast, his third of the season and first since March, put the Gamecocks (47-14) ahead 6-1.
Florida St. 9, Alabama 5
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. ó Rafael Lopez and James Ramsey each drove in a pair of runs in the sixth inning to lead Florida State to a 9-5 come-from-behind victory over Alabama in the Tallahassee Regional.
Florida 5, Miami 4
GAINESVILLE, Fla. ó Nolan Fontana’s bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Florida Gators a 5-4 victory over rival Miami.
