NEW YORK ó This one didn’t come down to a foot fault, a referee’s call or anything else that could’ve made Serena Williams mad.
In fact, if Williams was upset about anything Saturday night, it might have been that she didn’t get much of a match.
In what was supposed to be her toughest test yet at the U.S. Open, Williams dominated top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals to move a win away from her 14th Grand Slam title.
Williams was back in the semifinals at Flushing for the first time since 2009 when, also on a Saturday night in Arthur Ashe Stadium, she got called for a foot fault against Kim Clijsters, then went on a tirade against the referee that cost her match point.
An ugly moment she’d love to forget ó sort of the same way Wozniacki would like to forget almost everything that happened on a worst-case-scenario night for her in the world’s biggest tennis stadium.
Her loss left No. 9 Sam Stosur as the last player with a chance to stop Williams at a tournament in which she has lost a grand total of 29 games over six matches.
NFL
NEW YORK ó Oakland rookie Terrelle Pryor will appeal his five-game NFL suspension, according to a person familiar with his case.
Pryor was selected in the third round of the supplemental draft Aug. 22. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell suspended him, however, for the season’s first five games for manipulating his eligibility for that draft.
NEW YORK ó Green Bay’s victory over New Orleans on Thursday night was the second-highest rated season-opening game in NFL history. It was estimated that more than 27 million people watched the game.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. ó California’s state Senate sent Gov. Jerry Brown bipartisan legislation intended to speed up construction of a possible NFL stadium in downtown Los Angeles, shrugging off concerns that it could draw a team from elsewhere in California.
NHL
CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. ó Two-time Stanley Cup winner Cory Stillman announced his retirement Saturday to become a player development assistant with the Florida Panthers.
Stillman spent 16 seasons as a left wing in the NHL, scoring 278 goals and collecting 449 assists while playing with Calgary, St. Louis, Tampa Bay, Carolina, Ottawa and Florida.
FUNERAL
OKLAHOMA CITY ó The First Southern Baptist Church was packed with people from all walks of life Saturday. They all loved and respected Lee Roy Selmon.
More than 700 mourners paid final respects to the Pro Football Hall of Famer and one of the best players in Oklahoma football history.
GOLF
ROGERS, Ark. ó Defending champion Yani Tseng shot a 4-under 67 on Saturday and Amy Yang had a 64 to share the second-round lead in the LPGA Tour’s NW Arkansas Championship at 9 under.
