CHAPEL HILL (AP) — A North Carolina judge is temporarily blocking enforcement of Chapel Hill’s first-in-the-nation ban on using a cellphone while driving.
Superior Court Judge Orlando Hudson ordered delayed enforcement of both the town’s cellphone ban and a new towing ordinance until a hearing Monday.
Chapel Hill’s towing ordinance limits how much tow truck operators can charge and restricts where and when vehicles can be towed from downtown. It also requires operators to report each vehicle towed to police at the time of the tow.
The judge wrote in his temporary order that the owner of George’s Towing & Recovery must use a mobile phone to obey Chapel Hill’s towing ordinance. Hudson wrote the company’s bid to overturn the cellphone law has a very strong likelihood of success.
