Summer fun: 4-H offers camps and classes

N.C. Cooperative Extension Summer Youth Program
•Celebrations Around the World, Monday, June 18, 9 a.m. –noon. Cost: $5. Grades: K–2. Class limit: 10
Learn how other cultures celebrate their holidays. We will be making different crafts such as Mexican Tissue Flowers, Good Luck Chinese Dragon, Spanish Tiles and much more. Snack will be provided.•The Best Thing I Ever Ate: Death by Chocolate, Tuesday, June 19, noon-4:30 p.m. Cost: $10. Ages: 9–13. Class limit: 10
The Best Thing I Ever Ate (TBTIEA) is a program on the Food Network that consists of chefs picking out their favorite dishes. Now TBTIEA has arrived in Rowan County! You are the chefs, and we are going to prepare favorite chocolate desserts such as Chocolate Covered Strawberries, Molten Chocolate Cake, Buckeyes and Super-Duper Chocolate Kisses. A few other surprises await, so this is the class for chocolate lovers.
•America the Beautiful, Thursday, June 21, 9 a.m.–noon. Cost: $5. Grades: K–2. Class limit: 10
Learn about our country’s symbols and our government. Youth will be campaigning, voting and learning about the processes involved.
•Got Milk? Friday, June 22, 8:30 a.m.–noon. Cost: $5. Ages: 8-13. Class limit: 20
Got Milk? will be meeting at the Piedmont Research Station Main Office, 8350 Sherrills Ford Road. Participants will get hands-on experience learning about dairy breeds, feeds and dairy foods. See a dairy in action at milking time. Wear barn clothes and closed toe shoes. Snack will be provided.
•Itchy, Biting, Stingy Things, Friday, June 22, 9 a.m.-noon. Cost: $5. Ages: 9-13. Class limit: 15
During this workshop, we will be talking about fire ants, wasps, snakes and poisonous plants. Learn what native plants and insects are beneficial, as well as those to avoid. Parents are welcome to attend with their child. Meet at the Nature Center at Dan Nicholas Park, 6800 Bringle Ferry Road. Snack will be provided.
•Exploring the Treasures of 4-H, June 25-26, 9 a.m.–3 p.m. Cost: $20. Grades: 2–4. Class limit: 20
Have you wondered what all 4-H has to offer? Do you want to learn more about 4-H? Come and explore the treasures of 4-H. This workshop is open to youth who are either new to 4-H or want to learn more. Bring a bag lunch both days. Snacks will be provided.
•Cooking with Katie, July 9-12, 9 a.m.–11:30 a.m. Cost: $20. Grades: 3–5. Class limit: 12
Want to learn how to cook? During this week-long series, learn about nutrition, safety and food preparation. We will also tour the Salisbury-Rowan Farmer’s Market.
•Everything Horse, July 23 and 25, 9 a.m.–noon. Cost: $15. Ages: 7–18. Class limit: 10
Learn about horses. On July 23, we will be meeting at Rockwater Farm, 250 Troxler Road, Rockwell, to learn about hippology (or the study of horses) and horse judging. On July 25, we will meet at the Extension office and use what we learned earlier to participate in a horse quiz bowl. We will also be making horse crafts and more. Snacks will be provided. Wear closed-toe shoes on July 23.
•Bug Out! Tuesday, July 24, 9 a.m.–noon. Cost: $5. Grades: K-2. Class limit: 15
Discover the world of insects. Participate in an insect hunt, make a craft and much more. Snack will be provided.
There will be a $5 registration fee. Registration begins for current 4-H members Monday, May 14, and is open to the general public Tuesday, May 15, between 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. You must register in person at the Cooperative Extension Office, 2727 Old Concord Road. Bring insurance information with you. If you have any questions, call 704-216-8970.
No registrations will be taken over the telephone.
NOTE: Participants must have completed kindergarten.
The Extension Office will be closed for Memorial Day, Monday, May 28.
Activities are open to all youth. You do not have to be a 4-H member. Please be aware of the age limitations for each activity.
Checks/money orders should be made payable to Rowan County CES. No registrations will be accepted without payment.
All fees are non-refundable unless the class is filled to capacity or is cancelled. Space is limited and available on a first come, first serve basis. All classes and events are subject to cancellation due to lack of participation.
Participants should wear comfortable shoes and clothing for all outdoor sessions. Sandals, flip-flops or open-toe shoes should not be worn.
For all trips and activities, Rowan County Cooperative Extension, its staff and volunteers, ARE NOT responsible for sunburn or insect bites and will not administer either sunscreen or insect repellant. Parent/guardian is responsible for applying these protective agents.
