Authorities searching for monkey on the run
Authorities and veterinarians in Forsyth and Davidson counties were searching Tuesday evening for a monkey that escaped from an animal enclosure at a research center late last week, according to media reports.
The monkey escaped Friday from its enclosure on the 200-acre Wake Forest Primate Center just inside Davidson County, the Lexington Dispatch reported. The research center is affiliated with the Wake Forest School of Medicine.
Searchers initially concentrated on the campus where they believed the monkey would remain, near its housing and feeding area, the Dispatch reported. But sightings have been reported this week in northwestern Davidson County and near Clemmons in Forsyth County, according to reports in the Dispatch and the Winston-Salem Journal.
The research facility uses primates for medical studies, but the 16-year-old female monkey is used for breeding, the Davidson County sheriff told the Dispatch.
