SALISBURY — The Hanford Dole Chapter of the American Red Cross has deployed local resident Marcus Lineberger to aid in disaster relief during Hurricane Isaac.
The National Weather Services said Hurricane Isaac came ashore about 10 miles northwest of Houma, La., with heavy rains pelting much of the Gulf Coast, including New Orleans.
This year marks the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, one of the deadliest hurricanes in U.S. history.
Lineberger, who has been deployed during other disasters, left Monday for Florida, said Red Cross Spokeswoman Kate Meier.
It is unclear where Lineberger has been sent now.
“He’s been shifted. He’s in the Gulf,” Meier said.
Lineberger is providing technology services, setting up computets and providing IT help, she said.
Deployments typically run two to three weeks long, and volunteers spend 12 to 14 hour days helping in the areas they are needed.
The Red Cross has deployed 65 volunteers from North Carolina. Nationally, the agency has 2,700 disaster workers assisting in the Gulf.
“That number will probably grow,” Meier said.
Lineberger worked with relief efforts during Hurricane Irene last September. In July 2011, he returned home after assisting with flood response in North Dakota.
Frank Thomason, director of Rowan County Emergency Services, said there have not been any requests for local departments to aid in disaster response through his office.
There is a national mutual aid compact that allows state-to-state mutual aid, he said.
Thomason said if, for instance, Louisiana needs assistance from North Carolina, then North Carolina officials who can provide help would offer help through the mutual aid system and indicate what resources it could provide.
In the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, a team of 21 Rowan volunteers went to the Gulf coast to help rescue workers. Volunteers from the Sheriff’s Office, Rowan Rescue Squad and the Salisbury Fire Department helped recover bodies and enforce the law in the devastated city of Waveland, Miss.
This week, Hurricane Isaac’s storm surge overcame seawalls and flooded Waveland once again.
