SALISBURY – Police charged a 19-year-old Monday with robbing a taxi cab driver with a knife in June.
Kelvin Lamont Kelly Jr., of South Merritt Avenue, was arrested after three months of investigation. He was charged with felony robbery with a dangerous weapon.
Authorities have not released details regarding the investigation.
Leland Jay Dement, a cabbie for Safety Taxi, told officers he picked up a man in the 200 block of South Link Avenue on June 9 about 10 p.m.
After about a mile, near the intersection of Hickory Drive and Mocksville Avenue, authorities said Dement heard a click. The passenger held a knife to his throat, demanding money, the report said.
Dement told officers he reached into his sock and removed $22. But the suspect demanded more. When Dement told the man he didn’t have anything else, the suspect fled on foot.
The robber was last seen heading toward Colony Road.
Kelly remained in jail Tuesday under a $10,000 bond.
