Landis Fire Department hosts breast cancer survivors run/walk

LANDIS – The Landis Fire Department is accepting registrations for its third Breast Cancer Survivors Run/Walk on Oct. 6.
The walk began in 2009 after the spouses of two firefighters were diagnosed with breast cancer in the same month. The walk was started to help the women, Katie Bowman, now married to Battalion Chief David Sells, and Donna Rowland, wife of firefighter Tim Rowland.
This year’s event will start at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Landis Pool. All the proceeds will go to Relay for Life. The event will take place rain or shine.
It is a 5K, but participants can walk, said Recreation Director Andrew Morgan.
Registration for the race begins at 8:30 a.m. Those interested in participating can register online at www.townoflandis.com or pick up a form at the Landis town hall, Landis Fire Department or Landis Police Department. Registration forms can be mailed to Town of Landis, attention Landis Fire Department, Cancer Walk, P.O. Box 8165 Landis NC 28088.
The cost per walker is $20 for adults and $10 for children under 12. The day of the race, adult registration costs $25 and children are $20.
There will also be a 50/50 drawing at the end of the event. The cost for the drawing is $1 for one ticket, $3 for five tickets and $5 for 10 tickets.
All participants will receive a T-shirt and a medal. All cancer survivors who participate will receive a special T-shirt. There will be lunch and entertainment provided at the end of the walk.
There are some sponsorships or opportunities for businesses and individuals to donate items toward gift bags.
