KANNAPOLIS – The David H. Murdock Research Institute (DHMRI) announced today that it will receive funding from the North Carolina Biotechnology Center to sponsor the Genomic Sciences Regional Exchange Group (Gene REG) which is designed to focus on genomics-based research. Gene REG will serve as a forum for discussing scientific ideas, new directions and data analysis techniques from a wide range of genomic technologies and organisms.
The Gene REG committee members are from North Carolina State University, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC) and the DHMRI. The mission of Gene REG is to support ongoing genomics research at the North Carolina Research Campus (NCRC) and stimulate new collaborations in the greater Charlotte region. The forum will also aid in nurturing partnership opportunities among participants, building alliances for future research and strengthening relationships between researchers in genomics and bioinformatics. The group will hold monthly seminars at the DHMRI.
“The primary goal of the meetings,” says Mike Wang, Ph.D., Gene REG co-chair, “is to enhance relationships and communication between local scientists and various academic, commercial and government institutions throughout the state and region.” Meetings will be held at the DHMRI and are open to researchers from the NCRC, surrounding universities, private companies and government agencies.
Gene REG is eager to bring together researchers and leverage the greater Charlotte regions’ resources. Each seminar will consist of an hour-long lecture given by a guest speaker and will be held on the first Thursday of each month. Networking will begin at 3:30 p.m. with light refreshments, followed by the featured seminar speaker at 4 p.m.
Anthony Fodor, PhD, associate professor, UNCC Department of Bioinformatics and Genomics, will speak Oct. 4 on “Microbial Dysbiosis in Cancer and Inflammation.” This seminar will be held in the Training Room of DHMRI. Future seminars are scheduled in the DHMRI Events Room.
