KANNAPOLIS – Debbie Miller said her neighbor played a threatening voicemail from an ex-boyfriend Saturday.
The neighbor, who Miller identified as Debra Tucker Dixon, of Leazer Street, filed a report with Kannapolis Police, she said.
But about 2:30 a.m., Miller heard two gun shots.
“I heard her scream, then I heard the gunshots,” she said.
Miller said she saw a vehicle drop the suspect off shortly before the blasts. She wasn’t sure if he left on foot or was picked up by a vehicle.
Kannapolis Police said they caught up with a man who matched the description shortly after.
During an altercation with the suspect, an officer shot the man, police said.
Authorities have not released the names of the two people shot.
They also have not released the name of the officer, but have confirmed the officer is on administrative leave.
Kannapolis Police Chief Woody Chavis said both remain in critical condition.
Dixon is at Carolinas Medical Center at NorthEast in Concord.
The man is at Carolinas Medical Center at Charlotte, Chavis said.
Police asked the State Bureau of Investigation to conduct a review of the officer-involved shooting.
Miller said Dixon moved in with her boyfriend about six months ago.
Dixon went to Miller’s house Saturday and played her the voicemail.
“That’s a really scary message to me,” she said.
No one has been charged in the two shootings.
Chief Chavis said police are still asking for two motorists that passed officers on North Main Street Sunday morning to contact the department.
