Katharine Ann “Kate” McCanless and James Raymond “Jim” McDermott Jr. were united in marriage Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012, at Omwake-Dearborn Chapel on the campus of Catawba College in Salisbury.
Father John T. Putnam  Jr. officiated the 6:30 p.m. ceremony, which was followed by a reception at The Country Club of Salisbury.
The bride was escorted by her father, Ross William McCanless, and attended by Mrs. Kristin Woodson Harvey of Kinston as matron of honor. Her bridesmaids included Miss Britni Ann Branson of Charlotte, Miss Juliane Kathleen Kelly of New York, N.Y., Miss Catherine Drew Leonard     of Charlotte, sister of the groom Miss Maggie Gene McDermott of Shiloh, N.J., Miss Jessica Blake Raynor of Raleigh and Miss Katherine DeBeer van Wagenberg of Charlotte.
Dr. Jonathan Brett Overdevest of San Francisco, Calif., stood as the groom’s best man. Ushers were Mr. Steven Brent Harvey of Rehoboth Beach, Del., Mr. Joel Michael Marmion of Apex, brother of the bride Mr. William Roueche McCanless of Tysons Corner, Va., brother of the groom Mr. Joseph Eugene McDermott of Shiloh, N.J., and Mr. Ryan Edward Overdevest of New York, N.Y.
Serving as lector was brother of the bride Mr. David Ross McCanless of Rome, Italy. Guest registrar was Miss Joan Elizabeth Bolick, and program attendants were Miss Sara Elizabeth Agner and Mrs. Tina Eagle Smith.
Music was provided by Ms. Flora Abernethy Lester on the organ; Mr. Greg Pannell and Mr. Joe Gminder on strings; and Mr. John Brincefield as vocalist.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ross William McCanless of Salisbury and the granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Charles Eagle and the late Mr. and Mrs. Ross Watts McCanless. A 2003 graduate of Salisbury High School, Kate received a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from North Carolina State University in 2007, graduating magna cum laude, and a Master of Accounting in 2008. She is the Accounting Manager at Horizon Investments LLC.
The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Raymond McDermott of Shiloh, N.J., and the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. H. Eugene Hubschmitt of Alloway, N.J., and Mr. and Mrs. Raymond W. McDermott of Shiloh, N.J. A 2000 graduate of Cumberland Regional High School, Jim received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Catawba College in 2004. He is a Vice President at First Citizens Bank.
Following a wedding trip to Cabo San Lucas, the couple will make their home in Charlotte.
