In Saturday’s Wendy’s Invitational at Charlotte’s McAlpine Greenway, East Rowan’s boys cross country team had a score of 143 and placed third in 3A, the Mustangs’ highest ever finish in the elite event.
Top runners for the Mustangs were Conor Honeycutt (eighth, 16:31), Cal Meyers (14th, 16:43), Graham Lyerly (17:24), Justin Allen (17:26), Jason Basso (17:32) and Jason Troutman (17:40).
Carson placed seventh in the 31-team field.
Leaders for the Cougars were Kyle Gills (sixth, 16:30), Zachary Marchinko (20th, 16:58), Nick Thornton (17:46), Chris York (18:03), Daniel Sherer (18:05) and Gabe Peeler (18:58).
Honeycutt, Meyers, Gillis and Marchinko won medals.
South Rowan was 23rd.
Angel Ruiz (17:54) and Kurtis Reed (18:55) led the Raiders.
North Lincoln won with a score of 109.
? In the girls 3A race, Robinson won with a score of 94.
East was 19th. Carson was 20th. South was 26th.
Faith Blume (21:43) and Leah Bumby (23:29) led the Mustangs.
Kenzy Bauer (22:35) and Kylie Cox (23:43) paced the Cougars.
Leading South were Olivia Sides (24:39) and Casey Pruitt (25:34).
College women’s soccer
Catawba beat SAC rival Carson-Newman 2-1 on Saturday for its fifth straight win.
Sophie Waller scored for the Indians (8-4, 3-2) with 43 seconds left to decide it. Karen Presnell (Salisbury) scored the Indians’ first goal.
Catawba hosts Wingate on Wednesday.
College men’s soccer
Catawba had its unbeaten streak stopped with a 1-0 loss at Carson-Newman on Saturday.
Frankie Cardelle (Salisbury) made two saves for the Indians (6-3-3, 1-1-3 SAC).
College volleyball
Catawba lost 25-18, 25-21, 15-25, 19-25, 15-13 to Newberry in a SAC match on Saturday.
Kaitlyn Whitmer had 24 kills for the Indians (6-8, 3-3). Jordan Raye had 12 kills, 14 digs and 49 assists.
? Catawba lost to Anderson in five sets Friday despite 24 kills by freshman Rachel Gallup.
? Kayla Morrow (South Rowan) had nine kills and five blocks for Lenoir-Rhyne in a 3-2 win over Tusculum on Saturday.
College golf
In the first round of the Winthrop Invitational, Lauren Smith (Salisbury) shot 74 to help Appalachian State take the lead.
Winthrop’s Allison Lee (Salisbury) shot 81 and is tied for 28th.
College tennis
Catawba’s women’s team rolled over short-handed Lees-McRae 8-1 to improve to 4-0.
? Catawba’s men’s tennis team lost 5-4 to Lees-McRae in Banner Elk. It was the first loss for the Indians (3-1).
Local golf
Burl Brady made the second hole-in-one of his career at the Country Club of Salisbury.
Brady used a 7-iron on the 128-yard hole No. 2 hole.
? Frank Adams III of Salisbury won the Carolinas Pro Golf Tour championship tournament at Carolina Lakes in Indian Land, S.C.
Adams shot 15-under 201 in the 54-hole tournament. He had rounds of 65-70-66.
Adams defeated David Sanchez and Brian Duncan in a suddden-death playoff.
Adams trailed Fields by five shots entering the final round.
Adams won $6,000 for first place, plus $4,500 bonus money for his entry into PGA Qualifying School.
He was the tour’s leading money winner with $35,206.
? Twenty-two teams played in the annual Salisbury Academy Golf Tournament held at the Country Club of Salisbury.
The winning foursome of Ken Clarke, Barry McCall, Christopher McCoy and Chris Owen shot 16-under 55.
The team of Andy Jeter, Mitch Jeter, Chris Smith and Jerry Wright shot 56.
Closest to pin winners were Ryan Willams (No. 9), Tom Cipola (No. 14) and Clint Robins (No. 17). Clark was the longest drive winner on No. 3.
?Logan Shuping tied for medalist honors in a Tar Heel Youth State sectional qualifier held in Asheboro on Saturday.
Shuping shot 35-37 – 72.
He’ll play next weekend at Sapona for the state championship.
Middle school soccer
Salisbury Academy’s varsity beat Concordia of Statesville 7-2.
The Jaguars scored all their goals before halftime.
Carter Cook and Mitch Jeter had two goals each.
Andreas Kalogeromitros, Jacob Webb and Marcus Corry also scored.
Adam Drye and Mike Hughes were standouts. Drew Shelby and Marshall Overcash split goalkeeping duties.
Middle school football
Devin Turner scored two touchdowns on runs of 18 and 37 yards to lead West Rowan Middle to a 28-6 win against Southeast.
Turner also had a pair of two-point conversions.
Bryant Young had a 2-yard scoring run. Anthony Renegar returned a fumble 43 yards to score.
Offensive leaders for the Bulldogs (3-1) included Jacob Ollenberger, Hunter Davis, Eli Walton, Dalton Pratt and Dillon Simpson.
Defensive leaders were Turner, Renegar, Young, Owen White, Josiah Dixon, Brandon Wallace and Mykal Berger.
West is at China Grove on Tuesday.
Youth cross country
The J.F. Hurley Warriors racked up medals and ribbons in Saturday’s meet at Gastonia Ashbrook.
Top-three finishers received medals. Runners who finished fourth, fifth or sixth won a ribbon.

Eli Julian, 6, placed fourth Emma Calvert, 8, placed third.
Nate Shaffert, 7, placed sixth.
Matthew Burroughs, 8, placed third.

College football
Tusculum’s Bo Cordell became the SAC’s all-time leader in passing yards in Saturday’s loss to UNC Pembroke.
Cordell has 11,176 passing yards. Presbyterian’s Todd Cunningham (1998-2001) had held the record with 10,937.
? BOONE – Appalachian State quarterback Jamal Jackson threw four touchdown passes, ran for one more and totaled 398 all-purpose yards to lead the Mountaineers to a 35-23 win over Elon on Saturday.
Jackson was 20-of-29 passing for 304 yards with an interception, while rushing for 94 yards on 17 carries for the Mountaineers (4-2, 2-1 Southern Conference).
? CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Georgia Southern totaled 614 yards on the ground as they beat Western Carolina in a Southern Conference showdown 45-13 Saturday.
The Eagles (4-1, 3-1) scored on their first two possessions. Darreion Robinson broke free for a 48-yard touchdown run and Dominique Swope ran it in from 5 yards to give Georgia Southern an early 14-0 lead..

Swope rushed 20 times for 117 yards.
Western Carolina (1-5, 0-4) scored its first points of the game on Troy Mitchell’s 11-yard run, cutting the lead to 14-6 at the end of the first.
Georgia Southern’s defense dominated, and its running game continued to impress as the Eagles outscored Western Carolina 31-7 the rest of the way. William Banks and James Dean added 101 and 95 yards rushing, respectively, and two scores.
Georgia Southern has won 18 straight games against Western Carolina.
