Salisbury’s boys soccer team pulled out a 4-3 CCC victory against Lexington on Monday.
Salisbury (12-2-1, 6-1 CCC) stayed tied for first place in the league with West Davidson, a 5-0 winner against Thomasville.
Bobby Cardelle scored three first-half goals to give the Hornets a 3-1 lead.
“We made a lot of mistakes in the first half, and then Lexington stepped up the pressure early in the second half,” SHS coach Matt Parrish. “We were flat and didn’t play our best, but give Lexington a lot of credit for playing well. They came here to win and nearly pulled it off. We were lucky to win it.”
After Lexington rallied to tie 3-all, Lucas Capito scored the deciding goal on an assist by Cardelle.
Capito and Zack Sukkasem had assists for Salisbury.
Brock Overcash played well for the Hornets defensively.
? South Rowan topped West Rowan soccer 2-1 in NPC action on Monday.
Tony Ramirez stopped a PK with 1:46 left to preserve South’s second league win.
Luis Delgado and Luis Fierro scored for the Raiders.
Prep tennis
Salisbury is home today against CCC opponent Central Davidson today in the first round of the 2A dual team state playoffs.
Central Davidson made the brackets as a wild card team.
? East Rowan is a No. 1 seed as NPC champion, but the Mustangs are on the road in the first round of the 3A playoffs at Morganton Patton due to conference seeding priority.
? NPC runner-up Carson is at Charlotte Catholic, a No. 1 seed, in a 3A first-round match.
? YVC champ Gray Stone has a first-round bye in the 1A playoffs.
Prep volleyball
Carson (28-3) beat East Rowan 25-6, 25-13 and 25-20 in the first round of the NPC tournament on Monday. It was a season-ending loss for East.
Two of Carson’s three losses have been to undefeated North Iredell, which beat the Cougars 25-18, 23-25, 26-24 and 25-18 in a tough match on Thursday in Olin.
Carson split on Saturday, beating Reagan but losing to 2A power Starmount.
? Statesville swept South Rowan on Monday to clinch one of the league’s four playoff berths. It was a season-ending loss for South.
? No. 3 seed Salisbury swept No. 6 Lexington in the first round of the CCC tournament. Salisbury plays in a semifinal against No. 2 seed West Davidson tonight at Central Davidson.
In the other CCC first-round match, No. 4 East Davidson beat No. 5 Thomasville 3-1.
? Davie (8-7) beat North Davidson in the first round of the CPC tournament on Monday.
Anna Marie Jones had 12 kills in the War Eagles’ 25-16, 21-25, 14-25, 25-17 and 15-9 victory at R.J. Reynolds.
? Volleyball playoffs start Saturday.
?The Cabarrus Stallions beat Hayworth 3-0.
Emily Messico served for 16 points and had three aces.
Anna Messisco had eight kills. Kendyl Parker had six, and Emily Messisco had five.
Emily Messisco led in digs with 14. Anna Messisco had 13. Jessica Chapman and Alayna Long had 10 each.
Anna Messisco had 12 assists.
Local golf
A first-stage qualifying tournament for PGA Tour will be held today through Friday at The Club at Irish Creek,
Tee times begin at 8:30 a.m. on the No. 1 and No. 10 tees.
Basketball shoot-athon
Salisbury’s varsity boy basketball will be holding a Krispy Kreme Doughnut card sale and a “Shoot-a-thon” at Wal-Mart on Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m.
Goals will be set up. The team will collect money for free throws made and the team also will sponsor a shooting contest.
If you pay $1 and make three of five free throws your name will be entered in a drawing for a Salisbury basketball jersey.
College golf
Newberry opened up a 14-shot lead in the first round of the Rendleman Invitational women’s golf tournament at the Country Club of Salisbury on Monday.
Newberry shot 294. Tusculum shot 308 for second. Catawba is fifth at 317.
The individual leader, Newberry’s Barbara Castro, shot 69. Catawba’s Leslie Long shot 76, and Madison Kennedy (Salisbury) shot 79.
College volleyball
Averett setter Nicole Barringer (South Rowan) was named MVP of the recent Roanoke College Invitational Tournament.
Middle school soccer
Sacred Heart won the CCISAA Championship.
Sacred Heart is 27-0 the last two years and was 13-0 this season.
In a 5-0 semifinal win against First Assembly, Juan Salazar scored two goals, while Justin Boyd, Annie Habeeb and Will Taylor had assists.
Habeeb had two assists, while Ceci Cardelle and Elena Turnbull had one each.
?In a 9-1 championship game win against Burlington Christian, Sacred Heart took the lead in the opening minute.
Scoring for Sacred Heart were Taylor, Cardelle, Juan Salazar, Rigo Salazar, Eric Turnbull and Melvin Bonilla. Boyd, Cardelle, Habeeb and Elena Turbull had assists.
Boyd was named conference MVP. Also all-conference were Cardelle, Rigo Salazar, Elena Turnbull, Annie Habeeb and Adam Habeeb.
Daniel Scullion coached the Dolphins.
“Our players should be very proud,” Scullion said. “They played a season with great skill, passion and sportsmanship. It makes my job easy when you have great kids from a great school.”
? Salisbury Academy tied Burlington Christian 3-3 but lost on PKs in the semifinals of the CCISAA Championships in Statesville.
Andreas Kalogeromitros scored a hat trick for the Jaguars. Marcus Corry and Mike Hughes. Drew Shelby made six saves.
? Salisbury Academy lost to Statesville Christian 5-2 in the “Division II” championship match. Shelby and Marshall Overcash combined for five saves.
Hughes, Kalogeromitros, Corry, Carter Cook and Overcash scored goals. Corry, Kalogeromitros, Adam Drye and Lucas Capito had assists,
The Jaguars finished 12-3.
“We had great leadership from our eight-graders and went two seasons without anyone getting a card,” coach Tom Sexton said. “We played with passion, compassion and respect.”
Hall of Fame coach Sexton said it’s the first time in his long coaching career he’s ended a soccer season with a victory.
Middle school tennis
Salisbury Academy won 7-2 against Charlotte’s Trinity Episcopal.
Maria Capito, Juliana Anderson, Ivy Overcash, Ruth Clement and Jordan McCall won in singles. Capito-Anderson and McCall-Samantha Pritchard were winning doubles teams.
The Jaguars can go undefeated again if they finish the season with a win over Winston-Salem’s Summit School.
Youth baseball
The Rowan Razorbacks 9-under baseball organization will be holding tryouts at Salisbury Community Park on Nov. 4 from 3 to 5 p.m.
