CONCORD — The man charged with killing a 10-year-old Kannapolis boy waived his right to an attorney and asked a judge to sentence him immediately Tuesday.

Eugene William Mays made his first appearance in Cabarrus County court since being charged Monday with first-degree murder.

According to WBTV, Mays, 39, declined a court-appointed attorney and told a judge he planned to represent himself. He then asked the judge to sentence him.

After a recess, the judge appointed a standby attorney from the Office of the Capital Defender. Mays’ next court appearance is scheduled for April 30.

Kannapolis Police were called Sunday evening to a home in the 2900 block of South Ridge Avenue to check on the people who lived there. After forcing their way inside, officers found the boy dead and 32-year-old Christi Meslisha Stewart severely injured.

Stewart was taken to Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast in Concord, where she remained Tuesday, Charlotte news outlets reported. Although police have not disclosed the relationship between the victims and Mays, the news outlets in court Tuesday reported that the boy was Stewart’s son and Mays was her boyfriend.

Kannapolis police said Mays lived with Stewart at the home where the crimes occurred.

Police arrested Mays early Monday at a home in Gastonia.

The little boy was a fifth-grader at Royal Oaks Elementary School in the Cabarrus County school system.
