A Tennessee man is being held here on a $1 million bond accused of crimes that authorities say took place more than 10 years ago in the Rowan County area.
William Wayne Jones, 50, of Newport, Tenn., is charged with four counts of indecent liberties with a child and four counts first-degree sexual offense. The Spencer Police Department is investigating matter, which was brought to their attention by Tennessee officials.
Spencer Police Sgt. Eric Ennis said Jones was involved in a court hearing in Tennessee and “admitted in open court to conducting these acts.”
Ennis said he did not know what type of court case Tennessee officials were conducting. Jones was extradited to Rowan County today from Tennessee, Ennis said.
The offenses took place between 2002 and 2005 and involved at least two children, he said.
Spencer law enforcement was contacted by a law enforcement agency in Tennessee of the matter.
“My investigators began following up, and the investigators in Tennessee began investigating Mr. Jones,” Ennis said.
Jones’ employer is listed as the Wyndham Resort in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. Jones is scheduled for a first court appearance on Monday.
