Anna-Leigh Shuping, daughter of Jody and Kim Shuping of Granite Quarry, received her Venturing Silver Leadership Award at Wittenberg Lutheran Church May 12, 2013, from her Scoutmaster Frank Merrell of Crew 379.
The highest award in the Venturing Crew of Boy Scouts, the Venturing Silver Award is equivalent to the Boy Scout Eagle and Girl Scout Gold. The requirements include earning a Venture Bronze Award, the Venture Gold Award and requirements relating to emergency preparedness, leadership skills and ethics-in-action.
Anna-Leigh received the Religious Life Bronze in 2011, which included earning the Lutheran God and Life Award. As her Venturing Gold leadership project, Shuping organized and led a free mini-Health Camp at East Rowan YMCA with 36 participants and 11 volunteers. The camp focused on the anatomy and physiology of the human body. Campers constructed marshmallow teeth, made fake blood and performed hands-on examinations of a pig’s heart, eyes and bones. Campers also learned basic first aid, the Heimlich maneuver, CPR and the effects of drinking using special drunk goggles.
Shuping’s Venturing Silver requirements included the Leadership Training Course, BSA Swim Defense Training, lifeguard certification and conducting several ethical controversy situational discussions and an Ethics Forum.
Anna-Leigh is a senior at East Rowan High School and has been in scouting for 13 years. She has also earned the Girl Scout Bronze, Girl Scout Silver and Girl Scout Gold Awards.
