SALISBURY — Salisbury police are investigating the theft of two dozen metal fire hydrant caps.
Police say the 24 caps were stolen last week from fire hydrants near Lakewood Apartments, Hidden Cove Apartments and Lash Drive off U.S. Highway 70. The thefts occurred at some point between Monday and Friday, just down the road from Salisbury Fire Department Station No. 4.
There are three caps per fire hydrant. Typically made of brass, they protect the parts of the hydrant where firefighters connect their hoses.
Someone apparently unscrewed the caps and broke the chain holding each one into place, according to the Salisbury Police Department report.
The metal caps are of different colors, including blue, silver and green. The total value is estimated at $2,100.
Anyone with information about this theft is asked to contact the Salisbury Police Department at 704-638-5333 or Crime Stoppers at 1-866-639-5245.
