WINSTON-SALEM (AP) — The acting police chief in Winston-Salem is on administrative duty after his involvement in a shooting in which a woman was wounded.
The Winston-Salem Journal reports Assistant Chief David Clayton says acting Chief Barry Rountree assisted on a 911 call Wednesday about a man pointing a gun at someone.
Clayton said Rountree and another officer took cover behind a police car. A dog ran toward Rountree and he shot at it. Clayton said the bullet apparently hit the dog, struck the pavement and richocheted, hitting the woman in the leg.
The woman, who owned the dog, was treated and released from the hospital. The dog was hit in the leg and is in the custody of animal control officers.
Rountree is scheduled to be sworn in as chief Sunday.
