Benjamin F. Cureton III has been inducted into the Berks County Chapter of the Pennyslvania Sports of Hall of Fame.
Cureton is the son of Benjamin F. Cureton Jr. and Ruth Neely Wiliams. He was born in Salisbury but moved to Pennsylvania as a seventh-grader.
Cureton was a fine football running back at Governor Mifflin High in Shillington, Pa., rushing for over 800 yards as a sophomore, but he made his biggest impact in track. He set Berks County records in the 100 meters (10.42 seconds) and 200 meters (21.56). His 100-meter mark still stands.
Cureton received a football scholarship from West Virginia when he graduated high school in 1983. He played defensive back for the Mountaineers and got a start in 1986 when West Virginia played against Miami and Heisman-winning quarterback Vinny Testaverde.
Cureton’s greatest success was in track. He was team captain, team MVP and an All-American. He broke the Mountaineers’ record for the 400 (46.10) and was ranked nationally with a 20.9 clocking in the 200.
Cureton received a degree from West Virginia in 1988 and is also a graduate of Fort Leavenworth War College. He’s now a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army. He has served in Germany, Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Rowan County won 6-4 against Mocksville in the opener of a best-of-three playoff series on Friday.

West Rowan will play Concord at 2 p.m. at home in a playoff game, and then will travel to play Concord at 7 p.m. at the Mount Pleasant field.

East Rowan’s Sydney Poole was named to the North Carolina Softball Coaches Association 3A All-State team.
Davie’s Morgan Hendrix and Caroline Miller made the 4A team. Gray Stone’s Jordan Orick and Katie Kepley made the 1A team.

Salisbury’s Brian Bauk was named to the North Carolina Baseball Coaches Association 2A All-State team,
Northwest Cabarrus’ Tanner Bigham made the 3A team, along with Hickory Ridge’s Jake Barbee.
East Davidson’s Tyler Stroup made the 2A team.
South Stanly’s Chase Poplin, Austin Smith, Jordan Starnes and Russ Weiker and West Montgomery’s Cody McKenzie and Hunter Hamilton made the 1A team.

Back-to-back homers by Keon Barnum and Brent Tanner sparked the Kannapolis Intimidators to a 4-2 win at Hickory in a game that was suspended Thursday and completed on Friday.
• Hickory rolled 8-2 against Kannapolis in Friday’s regularly scheduled game.
Hickory scored eight runs in the first inning.
Kannapolis hurlers fanned 17 batters, but the Intimidators couldn’t come back.

China Grove Middle School will begin summer workouts for 7th and 8th graders interested in playing football this fall. Workouts start Monday, July 8, from 8-10 a.m. and will be held every Monday and Thursday through Aug. 15. Wear shorts, T-shirt and sneakers and bring cleats.

South Rowan boys basketball workouts start July 8.
Workouts will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with rising 9th-10th graders from 4:30-6 and rising 11-12th graders from 6-8 p.m.
Workouts on Mondays and Wednesdays will be from 8:30-10 a.m. for rising 9th-10th graders and from 10-noon for rising 11-12th graders.

The 2013 CIAA volleyball championships will be held at Winston-Salem State on Nov. 15-17, and the CIAA football championship game will be played at WSSU’s Bowman-Gray Stadium on Nov. 16.
