Police say a 21-year-old Salisbury man led them on a high speed chase early Tuesday morning that continued even after his vehicle blew two tires. Salisbury Police charged Reid David Williams with felony fleeing to elude arrest. Police Officer Karl Boehm attempted to stop Williams just before 1:30 a.m. near Jake Alexander Boulevard and Harrison Street who was traveling 58 mph in a 45 mph zone. Officials said the speeds reached more than 100 mph. On at least two occasions officers deployed stop sticks, but that did not stop Williams, who continued to speed. The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office also deployed stop sticks.
He drove his Subaru Impreza down Arlington Street, Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and onto Klumac, and into the Kohl’s Department store parking lot. He circled back onto Julian Road, traveled Mooresville Road and Sherrills Ford Road before police were able to stop him at N.C. 801 and Sherrills Ford Road. The chase lasted more than 20 minutes. It is not clear why Williams continued to drive, but officials believe he was headed to Neel Estates, where he lives.
Williams remains in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $2,500 secured bond.
