Two people were charged this week after being accused of breaking into their neighbor’s home on Falcon Lane and taking more than $1,000 worth of items.
The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office said a number of juveniles were suspected of taking items from the home, as were relatives of the accused.
Vernon David Carroll, 44, was charged with felony breaking and entering, felony larceny after breaking and entering, misdemeanor possession of stolen goods and two counts contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile. Irene McCombs, 72, was charged with breaking and entering, aiding and abetting larceny (both felonies) and misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile.
The two were charged Thursday, but the home was last known secured Tuesday.
The homeowner told a deputy he and his wife were moving and went to check on the home when they discovered the front door had been forced open.
The deputy spoke with McCombs, who told the officer her grandson had taken a laptop from the home, but she made him return it. McCombs also claimed she ran several neighborhood children away from the property.
Carroll and his 14-year-old son are accused of taking a washing machine, and his 12-year-old daughter is also accused of taking a can of hair product. Carroll told the deputy that McCombs told him the homeowners left and weren’t returning, and that she could have a washer and dryer.
An air conditioner, jewelry, fishing rod, Playstation game console and laptop were also taken. Two other juveniles are accused of entering the home and taking items.
Carroll and McCombs were both issued written promises to appear in court.
