Following a shooting in eastern Rowan, one man is in the hospital and another is charged with assault with a deadly weapon following a confrontation at a home.
Jarrett Leonard was found in the living room of a home at 1030 Ashford Circle at about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, suffering from a gunshot wound. Rowan County Sheriff’s deputies learned the home belonged to Kevin Lambert, who had called 911 after Leonard had run to his home and asked him to call 911.
Deputies began conducting interviews and collecting evidence which indicated Leonard went to James Calvin Scott’s home on Zebulon Lane and began beating on the side of the home. Scott, 68, said he told Leonard to leave several times, but Leonard continued towards him. Scott armed himself with a 12-gauge shotgun and confronted Leonard outside.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Scott again told Leonard to get off his property. Leonard then walked toward Scott, who fired the shotgun, which was apparently loaded with birdshot. Leonard had numerous pellet strikes to his upper torso, as well as facial trauma. Leonard had a collapsed lung when he arrived at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center, and was treated there, but he was flown to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem for further treatment.
Scott was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to inflict serious injury and placed in the Rowan County Detention Center under $4,000 secured bond.
