SPENCER — Kevin Jones said with the right leadership, Spencer has the potential to be one of the best small towns in North Carolina.
Jones, 33, is running for a second term on the Spencer Board of Aldermen.
“I want to make Spencer a great place for my family to live,” he said.
Jones’ goals include continuing to develop Spencer Woods and using the momentum from the Small Town Main Street program to revitalize the town.
Spencer Woods, also known as the Fred Stanback Educational Forest & Preserve, is the 42-acre forest bound by Rowan Avenue, Salisbury Avenue and 17th Street. The LandTrust for Central North Carolina has been working with Spencer for more than a year to develop the property into a passive nature preserve.
The town bought the land with a $200,000 state grant secured by the LandTrust, which saved the forest from clear cutting.
“We have seen a lot of improvement in the town over the past several years that I hope leads to more growth,” Jones said.
The owner of a Subway franchise, Jones earned a bachelor’s degree from Elon University. He’s involved with Rowan Helping Ministries, North Rowan Elementary PTA and the Granite Quarry Merchants Association.
Jones and five other incumbents on the town board are up for re-election. They face two challengers.
