Cleveland man wanted on assault charge

Following a fight in Statesville, the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office is looking for Jonathan Barry Upright, 29, of Tripplette Road, Cleveland. He is wanted on charges of assault inflicting serious injury with a minor present and assault on a female.
On Sept. 5 at approximately 2 p.m. Iredell County Emergency Communications got a call about a fight in progress on King Street in Statesville. When deputies arrived, they found the caller, who said the fight was between her niece and the niece’s boyfriend. They were also told the suspect had fled on foot prior to their arrival. The victim was said to be at 1103 King St.
The deputies went to King Street and interviewed the female victim, who said there had been a verbal argument between her and the suspect which turned into an assault. Efforts to find the suspect were unsuccessful. A warrant was issued for assault on a female.
The case was assigned to Detective Sgt. Sean Schutt of the Special Victims Unit. Schutt met with the victim and photographed the injuries and interviewed her. He told the Iredell County Department of Social Services about a small child seeing the assault.
As a result of this investigation, Schutt got another warrant on Upright for assault inflicting serious injury with a minor present.
