Three people were charged Tuesday after a police officer stopped a car that had a broken taillight.
The officer stopped a Nissan Sentra at South Main and Old South Main streets around 9:15 p.m. The officer noticed the front passenger tossed something out of the window, a Salisbury Police Department report said. When the vehicle was stopped officers talked to the occupants, who were subsequently charged.
The driver, Amber Jo Scoggins, 20, of West Bank Street, Granite Quarry, was charged with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. Officers charged Scoggins after they found a smoking pipe in a cigarette pack under the front seat. She was issued a written promise to appear in court later this month.
A passenger, Cody Ryan Bell, 20, of Heilig Avenue, Salisbury, was charged with felony cocaine possession and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.
A department report said Bell tossed a pill bottle out of the window that contained 15 small crack rocks. Officers also seized $147 from Bell. He was given a $5,000 secured bond and remains in the Rowan County Detention Center.
A rear-seat passenger, Elizabeth Danielle Hill, 18, of Gold Hill Road, Gold Hill, was charged with cocaine possession, misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, misdemeanor possession of an open container and misdemeanor failure to appear in court for a shoplifting charge.
A report said officers found two crack rocks in her purse, a smoking pipe and clear plastic baggies with white residue. Hill remains in the county jail under a $5,000 secured bond.
