Three athletes from South Rowan made history on Monday.
Katie Carlton, Madyson Campbell and Brittany Luckey, members of the inaugural South dive team, competed in their first meet at Shelby.
Carlton finished fifth, Campbell eighth and Luckey ninth out of 30 participants in the event, which featured five dives from each athlete.
• South’s boys and girls swim teams fell to SPC opponent Hickory Ridge on Friday.
The boys lost 60-34, while the girls fell 48-46. Stetson Johnston was the only winner for South’s boys with a victory in the 100 backstroke. Reagan May (2nd in the 50 free), Dustin Jenkins (2nd in the 200 free), Andrew Perry (2nd in the 500 free) and Steven Lyons (2nd in the 100 fly) also swam well.
Nicole Mauldin (200 IM), Leslie Franks (200 free, 100 brst), Taylor Kluttz (50 free, 100 free) and Faith Casswell (100 fly, 100 back) were winners for the women, while the 200 medley relay team of Casswell, Franks, Casey Pruitt and Kluttz also won.
South competes today against Salisbury at South’s Corriher YMCA.
Despite frigid weather conditions, 320 people raced on Sunday in the Cyclocross race held at Salisbury Community Park despite frigid weather conditions. The course was exceptionally challenging this year due to the weather.
Emily Shields (Salisbury) won the women’s elite race. Kerry Werner of Birdsboro, Pa., won the men’s elite race. Both ride for Mock Orange Bikes out of Winston-Salem and both are students at Lees-McRae.
Catawba volleyball coach, Ginger Hamric announced three signings for the 2014 season. Joining the volleyball program will be Allison Benton (High Springs, Fla.), Hadleigh Loy (Eastern Alamance) and Rachel Stanford (Mechanicsville, Va.).
Benton is a 5-foot-10 outside hitter. Loy is a 5-5 libero. Stanford is a 5-10 setter.
Concord’s Rocky Reid has 3,131 rushing yards and 40 TDs and will lead the Spiders (15-0) against defending 3A champion Havelock (15-0) in Raleigh on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Livingstone cheerleaders Quadasha McIiwaine and Kelly Young were selected to the All-CIAA squad.
Wingate’s Janitsha Williams (Statesville) was named SAC Player of the Week for the second straight week.
Wingate’s Deion Turman was named SAC Player of the Week. Turman averaged 15.5 points and 12.0 rebounds and shot 58.3 percent from the field.
• Wingate won 90-89 in overtime against J.C. Smith on Monday.
Ryan Daye scored 33 for the Bulldogs and Turman had 29.
West Rowan Middle’s boys defeated China Grove 67-21.
Caleb Mauldin scored 15 points for the Bulldogs (5-2).
Owen White had 14 rebounds five assists and four steals.
Josiah Dixon had eight points and five steals, Olen Stamper had nine points, and Cole Myers had six points.
Zac Lee had 10 points for China Grove (0-7).
West plays North Rowan Middle on Thursday.
