Snow, bitter cold heading for mountains

BOONE (AP) — Forecasters say the rain that is expected to fall in the North Carolina mountains will quickly change to snow.
The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for this afternoon until Friday morning for the mountains about 3,500 feet north and west of Asheville. Lower elevations and areas around Boone are under a winter weather advisory.
Forecasters said the rain will change to snow today as a cold front comes through. Some areas could see up to 5 inches of snow and strong winds will bring wind chills below zero.
The weather service says even colder weather is on the way early next week where some mountain areas could go several days without getting above freezing.
