There may be a chill in the air, but summer camps are already gearing up for the warm months ahead. Salisbury Academy is inviting the public to learn more about local and statewide camp programs.
Salisbury Academy will hold its second annual summer camp fair, Thursday, Jan. 23, from noon to 5:30 p.m. Attendees will be able to meet camp representatives, get information on programs, and sign up for summer camps.
“This is a much-needed event for parents in Salisbury and Rowan County,” said Amy Wilson, who attended the event last year. “In one stop, you have access to a huge variety of summer opportunities for your children, from one-day experiences, weeklong residential camps, and everything in between.”
Day camp representatives from Rowan Museum, Center for Faith and the Arts, Waterworks Visual Arts Center, Piedmont Players and Salisbury Academy will be present. Representatives from weeklong camps including Camp Arrowhead, Camp Hollymont, Green River Preserve and Camp Rockmont will also participate.
Salisbury Academy will again offer camps this summer for pre-kindergarten through rising ninth-grade students. Some of the Salisbury Academy sessions include Splash Camp, Mad Scientist, Cooks and Books, Clay Creations, Oil and Water Painting, Adventure Groups, Net Sports, TEAM Soccer, TEAM Basketball and more. Children do not have to be Salisbury Academy students to attend.

Salisbury Academy teachers and administrators invite families with children entering junior kindergarten and kindergarten to visit the school for a preview night event.
“We invite families to come meet our caring and professional faculty who partner with families to develop a lifelong love for learning,” said Academic Administrator Beverly Fowler. “Our preview night is a wonderful opportunity for parents to experience the hands-on approach to learning that our teachers provide.”
On Thursday, Jan. 23, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Carter Kindergarten Building, parents of prospective students will have an opportunity for questions and answers about the school and will interact with teachers in demonstrations of typical classroom lessons. During this event, parents will learn about Salisbury Academy’s academics which incorporate the arts, foreign language and physical education in a student-centered model.

CONCORD — Cannon School is offering the Princeton Review SAT Prep Course on its campus for the third year. The next course runs from Feb. 1 to March 1, and meets on select Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturdays. Additionally, the course is offered in a concentrated single-week session during the summer from June 23-27, with the pre-test held on Saturday, June 14, in order to receive results prior to the course.
Both courses are open to private, public and homeschooled students and are recommended for juniors. The course focuses on the essential test elements and includes 18 hours of live instruction. The registration fee of $450 covers all course materials and a pre- and post-test. The tests are scored by Princeton Review allowing students to determine strengths and weaknesses, develop a study plan and gauge progress.

The deadline for application to Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics (SVSM), a cost-free, statewide program providing enrichment and research opportunities to academically talented high school students, is Jan. 31. For more information and to apply, visit www.summerventures.org.
Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics brings rising juniors and seniors together in residential settings for four weeks of intensive study. Sponsored by the University of North Carolina (UNC) system, SVSM is held on four UNC campuses across the state. The program provides high-achieving North Carolina students with the potential to excel in mathematics and science an opportunity to immerse themselves in investigative classes and research in a residential, collaborative learning environment. Students design, conduct and share their own research projects during the course of the program.
This is the 30th year of the program, coordinated by the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham. The program is cost-free to accepted students, with no tuition or fees. Approximately 250 high school juniors and seniors will participate in the program during June and July of this year.
SVSM is open to all current high school sophomores and juniors whose custodial parents or guardians are residents of North Carolina. Students are selected on the basis of proven academic ability, motivation in STEM fields of study and emotional maturity.
