SPENCER — The frigid weather didn’t deter the steady stream of people who flowed into the Spencer Doll And Toy Museum for an appraisal fair today, which continues on Saturday.
Many traveled from as far away as Pinehurst to meet certified antiques appraiser Michael Hansen.
Hansen, who lives in Concord, makes two to three annual trips to the Spencer Doll And Toy Museum to host an appraisal fair, just like Antiques Road Show, for the non-profit museum.
Hansen said many of the items he appraised today were family heirlooms.
“The variety of items brought into the museum today spanned the ages of time,” he said. “I’m always surprised to see what people have cherished and preserved. It was an amazing day.”
The most valuable item that came through the doors was a Braves baseball uniform from the 1950s. The uniform, worn when the Braves were still in Milwaukee, was valued at around $12,000. The Granite Quarry owner wished to remain anonymous.
Sliver overlay monogrammed tumblers, childhood dolls, crystal and paintings were among the items that found their way to the museum.
The appraisal fair will continue on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. People are encouraged to bring their family heirlooms or yard sale bargains. For a fee of $5 for each item, Hansen will give a verbal appraisal — and a history lesson.
